UNL Interior Signage Policy & Procedure

The Chancellor's Cabinet approved a standardized design for interior signage in 1993 as follows:

  1. All buildings will use the approved UNL standard signage design (as shown under the heading Signs)
  2. All signage must comply with ADA regulations.
  3. All buildings are to have directories. If there is an existing directory, analysis will be made whether to retain it or purchase a new directory.
  4. Permanent rooms will be named with raised text with accompanying Braille. (Examples include Mechanical Rooms, Lectures Halls, etc.) Non-permanent rooms may be marked with vinyl lettering, but is to be kept to a minimum.
  5. Any sign to be mounted at 80" or above must not have raised letters or the accompanying Braille.
  6. In a suite of rooms off the main corridor where there is not a receptionist present, the doors within the suite will have the standard signage.
  7. In a suite of rooms off the main corridor where there is a receptionist, ADA does not require signage. However, when names are wanted to designate office occupants, the UNL standard signage design will be used.
  8. If there is not a door and a sign is needed, the sign will be placed on the right side of the opening.
  9. All doors along the main corridors of a building must have signs.
  10. All signs are to be located on the latch side of the door at 5'0" on center and 4" away from the doorframe.
  11. All new construction or construction renovation projects will include the new standardized signage design and will be coordinated by the UNL Facilities Planning and Construction project manager.
  12. Each building must have the same color of signage throughout the building. If part of the building already has the UNL standard signage, then the signage for the remainder of the building must be completed with the same color of signage. If no UNL standard sign exists, contact the UNL Facilities Management Signage Coordinator at 472-3131 to discuss the options and see samples.
  13. Colors, based on visibility of text on background, that have been approved by Christy Horn, ADA/504 Compliance Officer, are as follows:

UNL Interior Signage Procedure

A. Interior Signage Not Related to a Construction Project

Department representative authorized to procure interior signage:

  1. Review UNL Policy for Interior Signage in this section.
  2. Review Signs in this section. The design of the signs must be in accordance with the sign types shown for campus wide consistency.
  3. Decide which Signage Contractor they wish to contact.
  4. If unsure which Signage Contractor to contact, or if samples of the signs are needed to be reviewed, meetings may be set up with one or both of them, at separate meetings.
  5. Meet with Signage Contractor to review samples and the types and costs of signs needed. If custom signs are required, they must still be compatible with the UNL standard signage design and the same color scheme as the rest of the signs in the building.
  6. There will be a charge for the Signage Contractor on an hourly rate for assistance with planning and selecting the signs needed, in accordance with the section titled Signage Contractors.
  7. Once the location, quantity, type of sign, wording/numerals/graphics and schedule for installation have been documented by the Signage Contractor, and agreed to by the department representative, the procurement may proceed in accordance with standard UNL Purchasing policies and procedures.
  8. Questions? Contact Jack Scott at 472-4814

B. Interior Signage Related to a Construction Project.

The Project Manager (PM) will:

  1. In all cases review any proposed new or revised room numbering with the appropriate A/E Services person for their approval and coordination. The room numbering should be done at the end of the approved schematic design phase so that these numbers are the only room numbers used on the floor plans by the architects/engineers.
  2. Review sample sign options by the Signage Contractors with the department representative to reach a decision on which type of sign to use.
  3. The PM will contact the selected contractor to manage the planning phase of the signage procurement to establish the locations, quantity, type of signs and text/numerals. The contractor's time for this planning phase will be charged at an hourly rate in accordance with the Signage Contractor section. Once the contractor documents what has been agreed to, for final review by the department representative and PM, the PM will procure the signage for the project using previously approved project funds. Note: if the cost of the signage is between $5,000.00 - $75,000.00, 3 quotes are required. If it is greater than $75,000 it must be publicly bid and may not be procured directly from the Signage Contractor.
