Large Passenger-Van Policy
The following policy is written for use of large passenger-vans, defined as 12 or 15 passenger vans. Effective July 1, 2002, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln no longer purchases 15 passenger vans. Instead, 12 passenger vans will be purchased and the 15 passenger van fleet will be phased out. Effective October 1, 2008 use of 15 passenger vans (extended wheelbase or extended length vans) will not be permitted.
In order to use a large passenger-van either through Transportation Services, Department owned, or from an outside vendor the following policy will apply:
Only UNL faculty, staff, and students that are 21 years or older may drive a large passenger-van while on University Business.
Effective May 1, 2007, all drivers of large passenger-vans must have submitted their first & last name, date of birth, divers' license number or a photo copy of their drivers' license and the employing departments cost object to Transportation Services. Note: The department employing the driver is responsible for all fees required to obtain driving records. Student drivers who are not UNL employees are responsible for all fees required to obtain driving records.
Driving records will be checked annually for all drivers of large-passenger vans.
All large passenger-van drivers must have taken and passed the driver training program offered by the University of Nebraska Lincoln in order to drive any large passenger-van. Please contact the Office of Transportation Services 472-2422 for more information on this program.
The occupancy of the van (including the driver) shall be no greater than 10 persons for 15 passenger vans and 12 persons for 12 passenger vans. All occupants must wear seat belts at all times; therefore, van occupancy shall never exceed seat belt capacity.
No van may be operated for more than four hours between the hours of 10:00 pm and 7:00 am for any continuous trip. A continuous trip is defined as the point of origin to the final destination. .
No roof racks or trailer hitches will be allowed on a large passenger-van.
The maximum speed on a large passenger-van will be 65 MPH or the posted limit (whichever is lower).
All other University policies and rules for vehicle usage will apply in addition to the special provisions listed above for the large passenger-van.
