Upcoming Policy Change

Beginning January 1, 2018, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will prohibit smoking, tobacco use and vaping on university properties. Learn more.

No tobacco products may be used in facilities or vehicles of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This includes electronic cigarettes or other forms of electronic smoking.

Use of tobacco products on the grounds of any UNL site is allowed as long as such use is not within close proximity (defined as within 10 feet) of any building perimeter. The ten-foot limit may be extended for some buildings at the direction of the UNL Chancellor. Buildings with 25-feet limits are:

  • International Quilt Center and Museum (February, 2008)
  • Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center (April, 2010)
  • Ken Morrison Life Sciences Research Center (August, 2013)
  • Barkley Memorial Center (April, 2016)

As in the past, UNL will attempt to aid persons who wish to stop smoking by providing remedial mechanisms authorized by the University’s benefits program. Faculty and staff may contact the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) at 402-472-3107 or and students may contact Health Education and Outreach at 402-472-5000.

Facilities Management and Landscape Services Departments will coordinate signage reflecting this policy, and tobacco waste receptacle placement.

Noncompliance with these provisions will be managed in accordance with existing human resource guidelines with regard to faculty and staff, and existing Student Affairs guidelines in as far as students are concerned.
